Meet GRA Executive Director Christopher Staples

When Chris joined the Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA) in January 2024 as Assistant Executive Director, he and then-Executive Director Michelle Pomerleau were introduced as a "dynamic duo" committed to leading the organization forward.

More than two years later, that commitment remains strong.

Following Pomerleau's election as District III Representative, Staples has stepped into the role of Executive Director, bringing experience, stability, and a clear vision for the future of the GRA.

For many people, the words gaming regulation may bring to mind audits, investigations, and rules. While those responsibilities are important, Staples hopes Band Members have an opportunity to see a different side of the organization.

"The GRA has an important job protecting tribal gaming, but we're also here to help people," Staples said. "We want Band Members to feel comfortable asking questions, seeking guidance, and understanding the purpose behind the processes." Many people know the GRA for licensing, audits, investigations, and regulations. According to Staples, that's only part of the story.

"We help protect one of the Band's most important economic resources," he said. "Our work helps ensure gaming is fair, secure, and accountable so it can continue supporting programs, services, and opportunities for current and future generations."

One of Staples' priorities is making the GRA easier to understand and easier to work with. He wants to improve communication, provide more helpful resources, and create a better experience for anyone navigating a licensing or regulatory process.

"We know regulations can sometimes feel confusing or intimidating," Staples said. "Our goal is to meet people where they’re at, communicate more clearly, and help them successfully navigate the process."

When asked what he wishes Band Members knew about the GRA, his answer was simple.

"That we're here to help," he said. "If we can shift the perception from 'Oh no, the GRA' to 'The GRA can help me with that,' then we'll know we're moving in the right direction." Staples describes his leadership style as collaborative, people-focused, and rooted in continuous improvement.

"The best solutions come from listening, learning, and working together," he said. "Lasting change doesn't happen overnight. It happens through small improvements made consistently over time."

As he begins his tenure as Executive Director, Staples remains focused on strengthening relationships, building trust, and helping people better understand the GRA's role in protecting a resource that benefits the entire Mille Lacs Band community.

"Our mission remains the same," he said. "Protect, serve our community, and find ways to get a little better every day."
