NA'AABANWE, EARLY MORNING MAN, BRANDON JOSEPH DUNKLEY

Na'aabanwe, Early Morning Man, Brandon Joseph Dunkley, age 44, of Minneapolis, journeyed to the Spirit World October 30, 2023.

He was born on December 19, 1978 to Roberta (Birdie) Dunkley, of Red Lake, Minnesota and Robert Iron Necklace of Fort Yates, North Dakota.

Brandon was a devoted father and had a deep passion for several aspects of life. He delighted in his cultural heritage, particularly as a talented grassdancer. He possessed a remarkable skill in golf, triumphing a Hole in One during a league game at Sandstone Golf. He was a Breakdancer, winning first place in Bemidji during a Fourth of July Celebration. He loved playing softball, poker, and fishing on the lake were among his cherished pastimes. Brandon's vibrant personality radiated through his role as a DJ, entertaining crowds and singing karaoke at the Courtyard. He possessed a compassionate heart, always going the extra mile to bring laughter and warmth to those around him. Although we feel the immense void left by Brandon's departure, we take solace in the belief that he embarks on a journey to the land of everlasting happiness. Skins liked to cook, and having recently perfected his fry bread recipe, he credited it to having memories of his mother's fry bread-making skills. Randy was a great son, and we are thankful to have witnessed the bond they shared.

Marie Gudim

Screen Shot 2021-08-12 at 3.27.48 PM.png

Naanogaabawiikwe (Marie “Sam“ Gudim) passed on into the spirit world on June 9, 2021. She lived a vibrant life that began with her birth in Cloquet, Minnesota, on March 25, 1937, to John Sam and Maggie Armstrong. Marie grew up and attended school in Isle, Minnesota, until the 11th grade and then obtained her GED, after which she then decided to help out her family with the sale of their cultural art and yearly manoomin harvesting. This is where Marie found her groove as a pro rice knocker. When she met Oliver Benjamin during her teenage years, they married and they became known all over Anishinaabe akiing as two of the best ricers around. They had six children together: James, Jacqueline (Moltaji), Julie, Jeffrey, Johnathan, and Jennifer. Two of whom, Jeffrey and Jennifer, precede Marie in the spirit world. She was also bless- ed in her long life with six grandchildren: Adrienne, Matthew, Dakota, Christina, Amelia, and Rebecca, and four great-grand- children: Isabella, Taliya, DeLilah, and Lucas.

Later in life, an old high school love came back around and she married Jack Gudim. They happily explored the world together. There wasn’t a stone they left unturned. From the dance floors of Isle, to the mountains of Hawaii, and even living their later years in the slow-paced snowbird life in Arizona during freezing Minnesota winters, they were absolutely inseparable.

Marie accomplished much in her life. She served as the Honorable District II Representative of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe for a number of crucial years while the path for economic prosperity that is seen on the reservation today was being built and bargained for in small meetings with the State and Federal government. As a woman in her time, it was trail- blazing to be a woman leading among men.

Marie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She always had a warm hug, a sweet compliment, and an inspiring word of advice for her friends and family. One of her most memorable attributes was the way that she lit up a room with her fashionista flair; gold glittery hair, red nails, red lipstick, and a killer pair of heels. She will always be remembered as a Mille Lacs Lake fashion goddess.

NAZHIKEBINESIIKWE DARLENE ANN BARBOUR

Darlene Ann Barbour "Nazhikebinesiikwe" was born on July 5, 1946, to Annie Murphy and Ned Weyaus in Onamia, Minn. She journeyed into the Spirit World January 17, 2023.

For years, Darlene was a teacher who taught Adult Basic Education at American Indian OIC. She taught many people and helped them earn their GED, often taking people under her wing, encouraging them to be all that they can be. She was a pillar in the Native community for many years and the matriarch of her family.

Darlene was a very strong and independent woman who was a great role model and example for us and others. She was a kind and caring person who was led by generosity. Always willing to meet any need one might have. Hungry? She'd feed you. Tired? She'd offer you a bedroom to sleep in. Cold? She'd buy you a new jacket. Not only generous, but a caregiver also. Even as a single grandmother of three, she was looking to help moms in crisis by doing respite care, taking care of other children in her home for a few days while their mothers got much-needed rest.

Over her life, she looked after and took in many of her nieces and nephews and anyone who needed her help. Her favorite pastime was gambling at the casino — and yes, she was a lucky lady. More often than not, she was a winner. Her passing is a great loss for our family and community. She will be greatly missed.

Darlene is survived by her grandchildren: Eddie Lopez, Andrew Barbour, Lili Tiwari, and Vinay Tiwari (grandson-in-law); her sister: Elizabeth Peterson, great grandson's: Jonathan Barbour Jr., and Thomas and Charles Harrison and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ned and Annie; daughter: Bonnie May Barbour; sister: Evelyn Murphy; brother: Walter Weyaus Sr .; and grandson Jonathan Barbour Sr.
