By Valerie Harrington-Wind, Chief Communications Officer Mille Lacs Band Legislative Branch
Within the legislative branch of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, there are roles that quietly shape the strength, clarity, and integrity of governance. Among the most vital is that of the Clerk of the Assembly and Parliamentarian—a role that ensures every voice is heard, every process is respected, and every decision is grounded in order and purpose. At the center of this work stands Danielle Smith.
Danielle serves as the hub of Band Assembly operations, guiding legislative processes with precision, fairness, and a deep respect for the community she represents. As Parliamentarian, she plays a critical role in maintaining structure and accountability, helping elected leaders navigate procedures while ensuring the legislative branch functions effectively. Her presence is more than procedural—it is foundational.
Before stepping into this role, Danielle brought her leadership and organizational expertise to Grand Casino Hinckley as Director of Special Projects. There, she developed a reputation for dedication, coordination, and forward-thinking— skills that now serve her well in the legislative arena.
A proud graduate of Nay Ah Shing High School (Class of 1996), Danielle began pursuing her future early, completing post-secondary coursework during her senior year. She continued her education at Central Lakes College, studying Business Management, and later expanded her knowledge with a certification in the Business of Cannabis. Her educational journey reflects a commitment to growth, adaptability, and lifelong learning.
At the heart of Danielle's work is her excitement for connection. In her new role, she looks forward to building strong relationships with the community and those who serve it. Her approach is grounded in respect, collaboration, and a genuine desire to uplift others.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Danielle is deeply rooted in family and community life. A proud resident of Vineland, she is a devoted wife to Daniel Smith and a dedicated mother to Ashton, Leeland, and her strong-willed daughter, Ainsley Jo. She is also a loving stepmother to Dustin, Cody, Chance, and Heather. Recently, her family grew even more with the joyful addition of her granddaughter, Marceline Jo Smith-bringing a new layer of pride and happiness to her life.
Danielle is known as a passionate and energetic sports mom, often found cheering on her children and local teams with unmatched enthusiasm. Her love for sports runs deep, rooted in her own days as a competitive high school volleyball player. Whether in the stands or on the road traveling with her kids, she embraces every moment of connection and celebration. And while she may modestly admit it, Danielle also claims a special talent-singing her heart out in the car when no one is watching.
Her story is one of balance— between professionalism and personality, leadership and humility, structure and heart. Danielle Smith brings not only skill and experience to her role, but also authenticity, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to her community.
As Clerk of the Assembly and Parliamentarian, Danielle is more than a facilitator of process-she is a steady voice, a connector of people, and a cornerstone of the legislative branch. Her work ensures that the Assembly not only functions, but thrives.
And in every sense, she represents the strength, spirit, and future of the Mille Lacs Band.
