EDUCATION BRIEFS: FRYBREAD ROCKS ON THE ROAD THIS SUMMER

Frybread is a rock 'n' roll band made up of Nay Ah Shing students. They have been practicing and performing this summer with a show at the District I Miskwaanakwaadookwe Community Center on July 13, and three shows in August. On August 21, at summer cultural camp in Rutledge; on August 30 at a private party in Onamia; On August 31 at the Native American Music and Arts Festival in Onamia.

Things will get interesting after school starts. On Saturday, September 6, students will experience playing two gigs the same day. In the morning/afternoon, the band will be in McGregor, performing at Water Over Nickel Day. They will break down their equipment and drive to Brainerd to entertain the crowd attending a rodeo at the Green Lantern. Many of the students in Frybread are veteran performers and they are excited about doing two shows the same day.

Music and social studies teacher Joe Covert is very pleased with the talent he has found at Nay Ah Shing. "This band keeps getting better, and every year we receive new talent in our sixth grade class. I expect great things from Frybread during the 2025-2026 school year," Covert said.

Frybread has more than a dozen performers. Pictured left to right are Aaralyn Boyd, Dani Sam, Cass Sam, Bryce Cash, and Arieauna Whiteeagle. Submitted photo.
