Mille Lacs Band Elders gathered October 26 and 27 at the Mille Lacs Grand Casino Convention Center for the Gichi-aya'aag Maawanji’iding Conference, meaning "Elders Coming Together." The two-day event celebrated the important role Elders play in preserving Ojibwe culture, language, traditions, and knowledge while providing opportunities to reconnect, share experiences and enjoy time together.

The conference featured presentations on health and wellness, fraud prevention, Social Security, estate planning, and resources for grandparents raising grandchildren. Participants also had opportunities to attend Ojibwe language and drum teachings, cultural activities and breakout sessions. Chief Executive Virgil Wind welcomed attendees and delivered closing remarks, while comedian Kasey Nicholson and the Frybread Band provided entertainment. The gathering also included meals, prizes and opportunities for Elders to visit with friends and relatives, recognizing their contributions to the Band and the generations who follow.
