ERIN ANDERSON: BUILDING FOUNDATIONS IN THE MILLE LACS BAND LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

Erin Anderson brings a background in Native American law, a commitment to public service, and a passion for supporting the Band's legislative process.

By Valerie Harrington-Wind, Legislative Branch Chief Communications Officer

The first months in any new role often set the tone for what follows. For Erin Anderson, the first few months in her position as Staff Attorney for the Mille Lacs Band Legislative Branch have been filled with learning, observing, absorbing, and gaining familiarity with the Band's lawmaking process, as well as getting to know the elected officials and Legislative staff that make it all happen. Under the supervision and dedicated guidance of her supervisor, Legislative Counsel Jared Miller, Erin has already learned a great deal and is eager to continue growing in her professional capacity to serve the Band.

Thanks to the talented Indigenous professors that she studied under while pursuing a Certificate in Native American Law and Sovereignty at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, Erin came into the Staff Attorney role with a great appreciation for Tribal law, governance, and legal frameworks. From day one, she immersed herself in understanding the legal framework that guides the Mille Lacs Band, dedicating significant time to studying the Band’s statutes and laws. Erin recognizes that a critical aspect of her position is not only interpreting existing legislation, but working to ensure that future legislation aligns with the Band’s political and cultural priorities and pays homage to the Band's legal and social history.

Beyond the statutes, Erin's early days have been equally focused on people. She has worked closely with members of the Legislative team, taking time to build relationships and understand the unique roles each person plays. This collaborative approach has helped her integrate quickly and effectively into the branch's day-to-day operations.

"Erin is an outstanding addition to the office. In her first couple of months, she has demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for critical thinking and a knack for client counseling that sets her apart," said Jared Miller, Legislative Counsel. "What truly distinguishes Erin, though, is her understanding that this role is about service. She approaches every matter with genuine care not only for the elected body we serve but for the Band members our legislative leaders represent, and that commitment shows in everything she does. We are fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated attorney working alongside us."

A key part of Erin's role has been contributing to the legislative drafting process. Over the past several weeks, she has assisted in developing and refining proposed laws, bringing both legal insight and careful attention to detail. Her work supports the Band's ongoing efforts to create clear, effective, and enforceable legislation.

As her first 100 days progressed, Erin began taking on a more active leadership role by facilitating workshops. These sessions are designed to support legislative understanding and capacity-building, helping team members and stakeholders engage more deeply with the lawmaking process. Leading these workshops marks an important step in her transition from learning to guiding.

Reflecting on her first few months, Erin's experience highlights a steady progression from absorbing knowledge to actively shaping the legislative environment. With a strong foundation now in place, she is well-positioned to continue supporting the Mille Lacs Band Legislative Branch in its mission to serve the community through thoughtful and effective governance. She is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the incredible legal minds in the Legislative Branch to advance the rights and goals of the Band.
