GRA UPDATE: A TRUSTED CONNECTION FOR THE COMMUNITY — Supporting Band members through guidance, respect, and understanding
Jun 29, 2026
Within the Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA), there are roles that go beyond processes and paperwork, roles that focus on connection, communication, and support. The Community Liaison is one of those roles, helping bridge the work of the GRA with the needs of the Mille Lacs Band community.
Cherie Ambrose brings this role to life.
As a Mille Lacs Band member and Elder, Cherie brings a powerful sense of responsibility and care to her work. "It's a pleasure to help others," she shares. "Small acts of kindness go a long way with everyone." She connects directly with Band members to help them understand processes, whether that means answering questions, explaining options, or simply taking the time to listen. Her role is grounded in being present, approachable, and supportive during important moments.
"I practice active listening to understand others' feelings and thoughts," she explains, emphasizing the importance of respect and understanding in every interaction.
Building Connections Beyond the Office
Cherie's work extends beyond individual cases. She remains visible within the community by attending district meetings, collaborating with Band departments, and making herself available to answer questions and share information.
Creating comfort and trust is a key part of that work. "I promote a safe space for sharing thoughts and feelings, and I'm open to listening," she says. Whether someone is reaching out with questions or navigating a more complex situation, Cherie focuses on making the process feel more understandable and less overwhelming.
When answers aren’t immediately clear, she continues to support those seeking guidance. "If I don't have all the answers, I'll find the right resources to help," she adds.
Grounded in Community
Cherie's work reflects a broader commitment within the GRA to be collaborative, transparent, and community focused. Its a reminder that behind every process are people; both those doing the work and those navigating it.
Through her role, Cherie has seen firsthand the impact of growth and change. "I've seen people make life changing decisions by choosing a better path," she shares. Moments like these reinforce the importance of meeting people where they are and supporting them as they move forward.
At the heart of it all, Cherie wants Band members to know they don't have to navigate things alone. "Reach out—| can only help if I know you need it."
