Mille Lacs Band member Wanetta Thompson has been named a 2025 recipient of the Virginia McKnight Binger Heart of Community Honor, one of only seven Minnesotans selected statewide for this prestigious 40th-anniversary recognition. The award celebrates people who are the lifeblood of caring, connected communities — qualities Wanetta embodies in every facet of her work.

"These seven Minnesotans embody the power of showing up with purpose and care. Across our state — from Moorhead to Red Lake Nation, from Rochester to Cook County - they are breaking down barriers, creating spaces where people belong, and building communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive," said President of McKnight Foundation Tonya Allen. "Their dedication, compassion, and conviction inspire us all, and we are honored to celebrate their significant contributions that make Minnesota a more caring, connected place."

A leader grounded in Ojibwe values, Thompson uses art as a catalyst for healing, cultural revitalization, and community connection. Through her Maadaoonidiwag ("sharing knowledge") program and Bear Paws Cultural Art, she offers free cultural heritage classes that teach traditional skills-blankets, moccasins, ribbon skirts, jingle dresses, and more. These classes strengthen identity for young tribal members and help ease the effects of historical and generational trauma.

Wanetta also creates bridges between Indigenous and non-Native neighbors through community workshops that build understanding and honor Native history. Known by colleagues as a "force of nature" and a humble, community-first leader, she continues to uplift the Central region through dedication, creativity, and cultural pride.

Her recognition reflects the powerful work happening across Indian Country - and the deep impact one person can have by sharing knowledge, culture, and heart.
