In a moment that will go down in the history of Nay Ah Shing School, the school's table tennis team is preparing for its first-ever appearance at the Minnesota State Table Tennis Tournament scheduled for February 21, 2026.

Led by Social Studies and band teacher Joe Covert, the achievement marks a milestone not only in athletics but also in overall school spirit. Nay Ah Shing School will compete against the state's top teams, bringing skill, teamwork and enthusiasm to the table.

The team's journey began last year as an after-school ping pong club in the school gymnasium. Ten students began practicing and refining their skills, quickly showing a natural talent for the game. Covert, an experienced table tennis coach who has led three teams to the state tournament, stepped in to coach the group.

"I've been teaching here for several years now, and while I've seen a lot of talent in the classroom and the band room, I never expected this level of success on the table tennis court," Covert said. "These students are amazing. They have this drive, this focus, and the bond they've formed with each other has been crucial to the success of this program. We are having a lot of fun."

As the team prepares for the tournament, excitement continues to build. For many students, it will be their first time competing at such a high level. Sophomore Cortney Nadeau said the opportunity carries special meaning.

"This is huge for all of us," Cortney said. "Not just because it's the state tournament, but because we get to represent Nay Ah Shing. This is the first time we've ever gone to state in an athletic competition, and it feels like we're making history."

Teammate Amelya said the team's success is especially rewarding because of their shared commitment in and out of the classroom.

"We are excelling academically, and we've been working hard on our table tennis skills. We are motivated to do our best."

Freshman Tanyah Nadeau, Cortney's sister and a key player on the team, said the team's competitive practices helped prepare them for the state tournament.

"It's been a lot of work, but it's been fun," Tanyah said. "We have a really competitive spirit, and I think that's what's made this team come together. When we first started, we didn't even think about going to state. We just wanted to improve and get better. But now that we're here, it feels amazing."

Despite the excitement, the team remains focused as it prepares to face some of the best table tennis players in the state.

"We know it's going to be tough," said team member Blaze Harkness. "But we've trained so hard for this. We've learned how to read each other's moves, and we've learned how to adjust. We've worked on our weaknesses and built on our strengths. I think we're ready for whatever comes our way."

Covert credited the school's administration for its support of extracurricular programs.

"Not every school encourages the development of extracurricular programs," Covert said. "I have always appreciated the unwavering support I have received from the Nay Ah Shing School administration. They have encouraged me in several different initiatives l've taken since starting here in 2022. Without that support, this wouldn't have happened."

Stay tuned for more exciting news about the team's progress as they get closer to the tournament.
