WATER OVER NICKEL: SPEAK UP FOR CLEAN WATER DURING THE UPCOMING TAMARACK PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD
May 29, 2026
By Kelly Applegate, Commissioner of Natural Resources, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe
Water Over Nickel's work to advocate for clean water is approaching an important milestone: the upcoming public comment period for the proposed Tamarack Mine. As the mine permitting process moves forward, this will be a critical opportunity for Band members, Tribal Nations, and Minnesotans to learn more about the project, share their concerns, and help ensure Indigenous voices are represented in decisions that could impact our waters, wild rice, and future generations.
Mine permitting is a lengthy process, and the public can help influence environmental restrictions and accountability. Below is an overview of what the public comment period is, how it fits into the overall mine permitting process, and how community members can participate.
What's the latest with the Tamarack Mine proposal?
The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe continues to represent our community in conversations with Talon Metals and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to advocate that Indigenous views and water safety be considered in the environmental review process for the proposed Tamarack Mine.
The Minnesota DNR is currently assessing what environmental impacts require further study. That assessment will be informed by a public comment period, which is an important opportunity for Minnesotans and Band members to raise their voices and help protect our shared waters for future generations.
What is a Public Comment Period?
A public comment period is a formal opportunity for the public to share concerns, questions, and feedback before decisions are made about a proposed project.
The DR is expected to hold a public comment period on the proposed Tamarack Mine from July 14 through September 12, 2026. Public comments become part of the official record reviewed by state decision-makers and can help shape future environmental review and protections.
The DNR will also host two public meetings during the comment period:
• August 5, 2026 — McGregor Public Meeting
• August 12, 2026 — Blaine Public Meeting
How can I get involved?
Band members and Minnesotans do not need to be technical experts to participate. It is important for the DNR to understand your personal experiences, concerns about clean water, and connections to the land and waters as they review the Tamarack Mine proposal.
